Where are we gonna put her?
So we've got a baby girl coming in August and the question that frequents my mind is, "Where are we gonna put her?" For those of you who haven't been to our humble abode, we live in a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath house. And we love it. In addition to our living room, there is a den which would be considered a bedroom except there is no closet. Since my blog is called "Collected Thoughts" and I have many of them concerning this topic, here is my list of ideas.
- Idea #1: the laundry room. Our laundry room is upstairs next to Noah's room and is quite big. A baby could easily sleep in there and for a couple of months I was convinced this was the best option. But I've realized that having appliances next to a baby could be a bad thing. Suppose my dryer shorts out and sparks a fire. Or Noah decides that his little sister would fit perfectly in the dryer with the rest of the clothes. You get my drift? So, this one is no longer an option. (But how much would it cost to move the washer and dryer to a new room and get a new connection? Any wisdom there?)
- Idea #2: Move Noah downstairs and put the baby in his room. You think this makes the most sense, right? Well, I thought so too for a very short time until I realized that I don't want my 2 year old downstairs while I sleep upstairs. We could convert our den into Noah's room, but what if he has a bad dream and needs us? Or what if he wakes up super early and decides to fix himself breakfast? So, I tossed this out and Noah gets to keep his room. (There are perks to a birthright, yes?)
- Idea #3: Allow Noah and the baby to sleep in the same room. I'm all up for my kiddos sharing a room, but not so quickly. I just don't think it's fair to Noah to sleep in the room with an infant that is going to wake up hungry a couple of times a night for who knows how long. I think he would be grumpy during the day for lack of a good night's sleep. When she decides to sleep through the night, I will gladly put them in the same room. (But what happens when she starts teething? Will I have to re-arrange things then? Better not settle on this one.)
- Idea #4: Purchase a good bassinet with wheels and let the baby sleep wherever is most convenient for a few months. Options include...our closet, Noah's bathroom, and perhaps a few more. This sounds the most logical so far. I could get out closet all cleaned out, remind Alan to pick out his work clothes the night before, and wa-la....a baby's room. (But where am I going to put all our clothes? It might be time to do inventory in there again.)
So, there they are. One gal at church asked me, "do you guys plan on moving now that you're pregnant?" I kind of giggled. They must not know my husband too well. A second child is not reason enough to move in our book I'll keep you posted on the progress. Meanwhile, please tell me what you think. Any other bright ideas?

That is definetly a dilemma to which there is no easy answer. My boys both slept in a bassinet by my bed for the first few months, then moved to their crib. My neighbor, who has more people than room, kept her daughter's crib in their bedroom until just last month and she is now 2 1/2. If you decide to move Noah downstairs, you could put a monitor in his room so that you could hear what he is up to. It depends on the child's personality, because Andrew would always holler for me or come get me when he woke up and never once tried to fix his own breakfast, but I know some kids would do that. You could put her downstairs, because she will be in a crib for awhile anyway, if you don't mind traipsing down the stairs to feed her at night. Good luck. Try not to stress!
